How to pass a work-from-home tech check: a step-by-step checklist

Tech checks are pass/fail and usually happen once. Do these in order before the scan and you remove nearly every reason to fail.

1. Confirm your connection type qualifies

Wired only: fiber, cable, or DSL. If you're on satellite, a cellular hotspot, or 5G home internet, stop here — no amount of setup fixes a disallowed connection type. Check whether a wired provider reaches your address first.

2. Get Ethernet to your desk

Plug your computer directly into the router with an Ethernet cable. If the router is in another room, either move your workspace, run a cable, or have a wired jack installed where you'll work. If your laptop has no Ethernet port, a USB-C or USB-A Ethernet adapter costs about $15.

3. Turn Wi-Fi off on the computer

Some scans read the wrong adapter if both are active. Disable Wi-Fi so Ethernet is the only connection.

4. Turn off any VPN

Liveops and Teleperformance say it directly: no VPN — hardware or software — during the check. That includes VPN features built into some antivirus products.

5. Run a speed test on the wired line

Use a standard speed test with the Ethernet cable connected and Wi-Fi off. Compare the result to your employer's minimum (they range from 5 Mbps up to 40 Mbps download; see the employer pages on this site). Screenshot it — Teleperformance and others ask for proof.

6. Clear the house's bandwidth during the scan

Pause streaming, downloads, and game updates on other devices while the check runs. A 4K stream on the TV can drag your measured upload down enough to fail a threshold.

7. Meet the computer requirements too

Many checks also test the PC: Windows version, RAM, processor, and that the machine isn't a virtual machine. Read the employer's equipment page before scan day.

8. Know the numbers for your employer
